Diffusion Weighted Image
Demonstrating an Infarct

The EchoPlus Diffusion Weighted Imaging Option provides isotropic diffusion weighted EPI image and T2 weighted EPI or FLAIR EPI images. The imaging sequence uses a motion resistant Single Shot EPI technique that is capable of imaging the entire brain in less then 30 seconds with B-Values of 1-1000 sec/mm2. Image post processing is automated and provides isotropic diffusion weighted images seconds after the scan is complete.

Features:
The EchoPlus Diffusion weighted EPI Pulse sequences includes the following capabilities:

  • Diffusion Weighted Single Shot EPI Acquisition
  • 3 Axis Isotropic Diffusion weighted images (S/I A/P, R/L) acquired automatically
  • T2 EPI or EPI FLAIR image also provided
  • Variable Diffusion Gradient Factor (b values)=1-1000 sec/mm˛
  • Automatic image processing
  • Whole Brain coverage in less then 30 seconds
  • Motion resistant for Uncooperative Patients
  • Spatial Spectral Fat Suppression
  • Ramp Sampling to Minimize Spatial Distortion (available on systems with +/- 125 KHz or greater bandwidth)
  • Zero Fill Interpolation(ZIP) to improve apparent image resolution

Additional Image Post Processing capabilities are available with the FuncTool Option

  • Apparent and Exponential Diffusion Coefficient Maps
  • Uses Isotropic Diffusion Weighted Images
  • Provides Exponential or Apparent Diffusion Coefficient Images
  • Eliminates the effects of T2 Shine through

Clinical Applications:
Diffusion weighted sequences are sensitive to early stroke and when combined with EPI FLAIR imaging, acute stroke can be distinguishable from chronic stroke. Differential diagnosis of acute stroke, due to thrombus, within four hours of onset of symptoms is critical information when planning thrombolytic interventions. Diffusion Weighted Images when combined with Dynamic EPI images can provide useful information for predicting future stroke, a critical factor in patient management.

"The Diffusion techniques supplied with EchoPlus make it the most powerful tool I have ever had at my disposal as a neuro imager…"

"Diffusion is critically useful in characterizing focal brain masses. As an example, it has the ability to differentiate tumor from abscess, tumor from infarction, and arachnoid cysts from epidermoid cysts…"

" Overall, EchoPlus has an enormous impact on the day-to-day practice on neuro imaging at our hospital."

- Lawrence Tanenbaum, MD
Section Chief, MRI & Neuroradiology

"The biggest benefit of EchoPlus is being able to better evaluate and diagnose strokes. We are now seeing Diffusions and Perfusions that show when a patient is at risk for cell death, which means we may be able to save some brain tissue."

- Bob Fair, MRI Supervisor
St Johns Medical Center
